A spotting scope can be described as a compact telescope designed primarily for terrestrial observing and is more suited to applications which require magnifications beyond the range of a typical binocular usually with a magnification power from 15x up to 90x. The majority of scopes have zoom lenses which allow the observer to have the �best of both worlds� � starting on a lower magnification to find the target and then change to the higher magnification to see close up details.
When choosing a spotting scope, you need to think about what you want to use if for (bird watching or ship spotting � which will determine the magnification required), where you plan to do your observing (on the move or not � a more compact model is easier to carry) and how long and what time of day you will be using the scope (an an angled eye piece is worth considering for longer sessions and a larger objective lens is better in low light conditions such as at dawn or dusk).
