We can't recommend this binocular too highly. It is without doubt one of the finest compact binoculars we have ever tested at under £200 (and we know that that's a fairly strong statement because we're selling this bino for under £60! At anything less than £150 this bino would pass for under-priced. It really is that good!

Solid and well made, the Lanthanum feels great in the hand, with the controls falling perfectly to your finger tips. The Lanthanum optics are simply superb, and are a perfect example of top-rank glass making a difference you can really see. Other features we love include the over-sized wide-angle eyepieces, your eyes relax and get totally absorbed in the view the moment you look through the binocular.

Ultra-wide field of view (6.5 degrees!), perfect for bird and wildlife watching, combined with the generous size of the eyepiece optics and long comfortable (13.8mm) eye-relief makes the bino a breeze to share quickly with an observing partner. Even if you or your partner are eyeglass wearers, the eyecups mode can be changed instantly from up to down at one touch (quicker even than screw-down eyecups). The binocular is full of great design touches like this - for example, the neck strap hangers are machined from solid metal and really have been designed to give a lifetimes service, as the manufacturers confident 10 year warranty would also confirm.

OK, OK, we know it's starting to sound like we've got shares in Pentacon, but we really are struggling to find something we don't like about these stunning compact binos. So for the sake of balance here are the things we don't like about the Lanthanum 10x25WA:

First and foremost is the colour scheme, if you like modern design then fine but the blue and silver makes the binocular look a bit like a prop from a Tom Cruise movie. We also don't like the two silver plastic finger-tip panels on top - we'd prefer dark rubber. The case too is nothing special to look at, and is a simple soft vinyl pouch (though functional enough with a usefully large belt loop).

And that's about it for the downers; compared with the long list of its plus points and stunning optics these niggles on the looks of the Pentacon Lanthanum really are trivial. After all, you buy a binocular to look through it, not at it!

Close focus is just 2.5m (98 inches) making this binocular perfect for trekking and walks as well as close-up garden birdwatching!
